About

Overview

Legends Ice Hockey is an organisation designed to support and connect former Ice Hockey players and officials and provide a range of benefits to it’s members, as well as host a series of games and events for players, officials and fans alike. Many sports throughout the world operate similar organisations for their verteran players, and we aim to fill this current gap in our own sport here in the UK – bridging the gap between the stars of the past and ice hockey today.

How it Works

Players and officials who have retired from the sport are invited to join the Legends Ice Hockey Association for an annual fee of £30 and each player will be affiliated to a 'local club' based on their locality or former team/s played for. Membership is open to players and officials based both in the UK and abroad, as long as they were once part of a registered British club.

Benefits of membership include:

Monthly e-newsletter

Discount package on a range professional services

Access to complimentary match tickets at a number of EIHL, EPL, ENL and SNL clubs (Subject to availability)

Regular sporting and social events organised for members including golf days and get-togethers

The use of the association to negotiate ice time at local rinks as 'Legends' for informal training sessions / scrimmages etc.

Events

Legends Ice Hockey will host a small number of 'Legends' games each season at rinks around the UK. The first Legends game scheduled for 2012 will take place between Durham Wasps Legends and Whitley Warriors Legends on May 6th at Whitley Bay Ice Rink.

An annual Golf Championship will also be staged by Legends Ice Hockey and will be open to all members to apply individually or submit a team. The first tournament will take place on May 5th at Ramside Golf Club in County Durham.

Long-term, we also aim to host an annual Championship Weekend of Legends teams, based on a series of short running-time matches, culminating in a Grand Final game for the two most-successful teams. We hope that this will bring together former players, officials and fans from all over the country and maybe, just maybe recreate some of that Wembley Weekend magic of old.

Smaller scale events (driven by our members) such as social nights, ice-patch sessions at local rinks and local golf days will also be able to be held and co-ordinated through the organisation.

Raising Money for Good Causes

As a company, we aim to give back as much as we can to the sport, and the local community. That's why at Legends matches, and other events, we will be donating a significant percent of profits generated to nominated local charities, as well as the Ice Hockey Players Benevolent Fund and junior development programmes connected to the rinks and clubs involved.

Who's behind Legends Ice Hockey?

Legends Ice Hockey is owned and operated by three individuals who are passionate about the sport and whose backgrounds between them are deeply-rooted in both playing, supporting and promoting our great sport.

Frank Killen is a former Durham Wasps, Humberside Seahawks and Nottingham Panthers netminder and since retiring as a professional player has gone on to work in marketing with Hull KR Rugby League Club, Hull City Football Club, The Press Association and more recently with Newcastle United Football Club.

Gareth Chalmers has been heavily involved in the sport for fifteen years now through his involvement with the various professional teams in the North East of England. Today his company 9gc owns one of Europe's biggest minor pro Hockey Agencies, one of the UK's leading ice hockey websites for the sport as well as acting as a business development advisor to a number of European based clubs.

Rich Endean has led the fight to bring an ice rink back to the city of Durham through the County Durham Ice Foundation. His tireless efforts saw his involvement in 2010 in bringing temporary ice back to the city for the first time in fifteen years with the ultimate aim of finalising investment for a sustainable facility in the County Durham region. Rich also runs his own marketing and design consultancy based in Newcastle.
